This cozy, family-friendly suburb of Cleveland is located just south of the Lake Erie’s western shoreline. From a quiet village that relied on agriculture, it has grown to an established city with a population close to 32,000 residents. Much of this growth occurred in the second half of the 20th century, when families left the cities for a more peaceful suburban lifestyle. For this reason, the infrastructure of the city is quite reliable; the hospital opened in the 1980s, new police and fire stations were built in the 1990s and the recreation center and large park site were opened in 1998. It is situated in the northwest section of Cuyahoga County, about 12 miles west of Cleveland. Several major roadways, including Interstates 490 and 480, provide access to neighboring communities and greater Ohio. Most of Westlake’s workforce is employed in the following economic sectors: educational, health and social services; professional services; manufacturing; and finance, insurance and real estate. There are several major employers located within the city and many more in nearby Cleveland. Public education is provided by Westlake City School District. The district serves about 4,000 students through seven school sites. Local recreation facilities and activities are managed by the local recreation department. The main feature is the expansive recreation center set on an 86-acre park site. The site includes basketball and tennis courts, an aquatic center, community rooms, fitness area, athletic fields, indoor track and a Tot Room.
